Avalanche of Baby Boomers Turning to Alternative Medicine 4/30/05: "People living with chronic pain will try almost anything they can to relieve it. Not surprisingly, more and more older adults suffering from chronic illnesses are realizing conventional medicine isn't always the answer to their problems and are turning to alternative medicine such as:
Chiropractor
Acupuncture
Massage therapy
Breathing exercises
Herbal medicine
Meditation
The biggest concern in using alternative medicine, however, is that such methods have not been tested for safety and effectiveness, yet a large number of older adults are using them.
And the Survey Says ...
In a study conducted by researchers at Ohio State University, results indicated the acceptance of alternative medicine among older adults was profound. In fact, more than 70 percent of older adults used some kind of alternative medicine (such as acupuncture and herbal medicines) in 2000. Such results were surprising, considering a 2002 study found a lower acceptance rate -- 62 percent -- among all adults. "

>From Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility (Feb. 28, 2005)

THIS TIME IT'S FINAL
TILLAMOOK rBGH-FREE!
The Tillamook County Creamery Association's membership voted 83-43 to back
up the Board's previous decision to go rBGH-free, effective April 1, 2005.
After a two-hour discussion, the co-op's members decided to listen to their
consumers' wishes rather than Monsanto.
In an incredible display of consumer activism and strength, over 6,500
people commented to Tillamook by phone, e-mail, fax and letter. Over 98% of
the comments stressed the desire for the dairy to go rBGH-free! If ever
there was a demonstration that this genetically engineered hormone has
nothing to offer but increased disease rates in cows and health risks to
consumers, this was it."

USDA BANS "USDA ORGANIC" LABELS on Body Care Products: "USDA BANS 'USDA ORGANIC' LABELS on Body Care Products
From OTA's News Flash April 22, 2005
USDA posts response to NOSB recommendations: NOP prohibits organic certification of personal care products
USDA's National Organic Program (NOP) today posted a statement in response to National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) recommendations on various provisions that had been raised by NOP a year ago. Included are such issues as using fishmeal as feed additives, inerts in pesticide formulations, origin of livestock, antibiotics, and the scope of NOP. Included was a statement prohibiting the certification of personal care products to NOP organic standards.
Private certification is allowed, but no personal care product may be certified to the NOP standard or carry the USDA seal. OTA understands that organic ingredients may be identified, and truthful front-panel claims, such as the percentage of organic ingredients, may be made. See www.ams.usda.gov/nop/NOP/PolicyStatements/USDANOSBFeedback3_10_05.pdf."

FDA Studies Show Aspartame Link to Brain Tumors: "FDA Studies Show Aspartame Link to Brain Tumors
http://www.prweb.com/releases/2005/4/prweb228424.htm
Mission Possible is seeking New York and New Jersey plaintiffs for litigation on aspartame.
ATLANTA (PRWEB via PR Web Direct) April 12, 2005 -- Consumer rights advocacy group Mission Possible is leading a campaign to fill a product liability lawsuit with New York and New Jersey residents whose brain tumors may be linked to the consumption of the artificial sweetener aspartame (NutraSweet/Equal/Spoonful, etc.).
'Neither congressional hearings or repeated petitions calling for a ban have stopped aspartame manufacturers from exposing the public to this sweet poison.
In fact, aspartame producers are reporting increased sales and boasting the marketplace addition of 'neotame,' a new aspartame product,' explained Mission Possible International Founder Betty Martini.
For 16 years, the FDA resisted pressure to approve aspartame due to safety studies linking the artificial sweetener to numerous adverse reactions, including the development of brain tumors in animal studies.
In 1977, FDA investigator Jerome Bressler released a report describing how, in clinical studies submitted to the FDA, Searle removed aspartame-induced brain tumors that developed in lab rats and placed them back into the study. If the rats died, Bressler reported, Searle would resurrect them on paper.
In a personal conversation with Martini and prominent aspartame experts, Doctors H. J. Roberts and Russell Blaylock he admitted the studies were so bad FDA removed 20% of the most damaging data of his report."
